navarin printanier: French Fridays with Dorie

It's a quieter week.  Last post involved little Sadie's cast.  Thanks for the well wishes...and FYI, I'm the Nana, not the Mama!  This weekend is really quiet for me...babies are at the beach, and I'm on dog watch in Austin. But before they left, I made the navarin printanier.

Served up with yummy buttermilk bread for dipping.  I didn't have any peas in the freezer, but I did have fresh snow peas that I shelled (took an hour - but it worked!)

I had 3 different colors of carrots in my veggie delivery this week!
Orange, yellow and ... let's call it Barbie Pink!!

Browned lamb cooked with pan grilled veggies (and the rest of the ingredients), and voila, cook it all and you get Lamb Stew (aka navarin printanier)

Babies made it to the beach - and Sadie got her cast off right before the drive down.
Of course this is big.  It means no sand in the cast!!

Another great recipe from Dorie Greenspan's Around My French Table.  Yes, I'd make it again.  I also would like to try it with beef.  To see what others did this week with this recipe, you can visit French Fridays with Dorie.

  2. I loved the three different colors of carrots. I just saw my first carrot rainbow at the Farmer's Market two weeks ago. That gives a stew a different look, doesn't it. Were the peas work the effort. I love "fresh", nothing beats it, but one hour. You are a great Nana.

    1. Mary, the peas were worth the effort (and I was watching TV while I shelled them!). The flavor of the fresh peas was a nice layer in the finished stew. :-)

    2. I am jealous of your peas & your carrots! I've never even tasted another color of carrot before. Very pretty!

    3. Maggie: surprisingly, the orange tasted the sweetest, the yellow the mildest and the pink the harshest (as in not sweet) yet ok in it's own way. That was raw. Cooked I couldn't really tell a difference!

  3. I love your carrots! I have a thing for rainbow carrots, since I only discovered a year ago that they come in any color but orange. My farmer's market sometimes has these beautiful ones that are purple on the outside and orange inside. I can't see them and not buy them. Looks great!

  10. I'm going to join everyone else on the carrot-wagon and say that I love them, especially the pink ones! They certainly add a lot of color and flavor to the lovely stew. Oh one more thing, you're certainly too young to be Sadie's nana!

  17. I love your multi-colored carrots - I'm planning to plant some this weekend! I agree, this same method would work well with beef. I couldn't resist substituting a cup of red wine for a cup of the broth.
